Definitions of titles in Ayurveda

Technician

A person who applies therapeutic treatments without knowledge of disease diagnosis, pathology and Ayurvedic anatomy, but has an understanding of constitutional diagnosis and can treat doshas (vata, pitta, kapha) through external methods / therapies and through a basic knowledge of diet and lifestyle as per constitution.

Practitioner / Therapist

A person who applies therapeutic treatments with knowledge of basic disease diagnosis, pathology and Ayurvedic anatomy, and who has an understanding of constitutional diagnosis and can treat dosha and agni through internal and external means as per dosha and sub-dosha and through a therapeutic knowledge of diet and lifestyle. This person has a basic knowledge of purification therapies and Dravyaguna (Ayurvedic medicines and their formulation).

Doctor / Vaidya

A person who applies advanced therapeutic treatments with knowledge of disease diagnosis, pathology and Ayurvedic anatomy, and who can treat agni, doshas, dhatus and srotas through internal and external means as per dosha and sub-dosha and through an advanced knowledge of diet and lifestyle. This person has an advanced knowledge of purification therapies and can develop protocols that can be applied by either of the preceding two categories. This person has an advanced level of Dravyaguna and can also specialize in any of the eight branches of Ayurveda, treatment or pharmacology.

Conclusion

According to the definitions of the above titles technicians would be trained in massage methods such as “Atreya Abhyanga®” which is a technician training. Practitioner and Therapist training’s would be like e-learning training of 1250 hours. Note

While some people do not except the above definitions due to private agendas they have been approved by a number of educators and university professors in India and Europe. The above definitions follow the guidelines indicated in Caraka Samhita with the additional of the middle level of “practitioner / therapist” which is a result of our modern medicine avoiding the reality that people need to be addressed at a human level for more than 10 or 15 minutes.
