Vedanga Jyotish & Ayurveda: Medical astrology

Traditional medicine is focused on determining the cause of disease so that the treatment can be individualized and directly stop the pathology. This can result in a cure or improvement depending largely on if the patient is treated early enough. Jyotish, or Vedic astrology, allows the doctor to see and prevent disease trends as well as to understand the gravity of the disorder. Ayurveda, the traditional medical system of India, has its own view of anatomy and physiology, pathology and diagnosis. Jyotish has the ability to understand the ayurvedic vision in detail and identify the causal factors of disease which can result in a precise treatment.

Usually, books on medical astrology only identify the disorder and perhaps suggest astrological remedies. When Jyotish and Ayurveda are used together the cause of disease, the treatment, the timing and cure become clear. This effectively allows the practitioner with knowledge of both systems to help more people overcome or prevent disease. This is not a book on understanding the persons constitution or Prakriti. It is a detailed thesis on differentiating why two completely different people have the same disorder from different causes and therefore receive different treatments.

This book is the result of over 32 years of clinical research by the author who is a practicing ayurvedic doctor (Vaidya) in Europe.

Excerpts from chapter 2:

"Medical astrology is not only the study of disease in the birth chart, but it is also the study of the prevention and cure of disease. Medical astrology in Jyotish is not a study of Prakriti as many books would have you believe, it’s a complicated study of life, because life itself is the cause of disease in both body and mind.
As a Vedanga Veda Jyotish uses an Upaveda, Ayurveda, as the medical system. Some authors would like to use modern medicine; others would have people use any system of medicine based on their perception of the houses in a birth chart. The Vedic sciences are already complete, and we do not need to add additional planets or medical systems. What is needed is to fully understand Jyotish and its relation to Ayurveda. They do not have the same views or associations and are not completely interchangeable. This why it is difficult to decrypt Jyotish and Ayurveda to use the two systems together.
What is presented in this book is an attempt to show how these two systems work flawlessly together. This is not a definitive text nor the final word on the subject. It represents 38 years of my own research into Ayurveda and secondarily 32 years of studying Jyotish. My study of Ayurveda has gone through many levels of understanding over this period. Equally my study of Jyotish over the last 32 years underwent many changes of perception and understanding. Until the last few years, the missing link kept evading my comprehension. Finally, I feel that I have been able to see how Ayurveda and Jyotish function together.
Intuitively I kept feeling the Nakṣatras were the missing link in my understanding as the 27 constellations are the oldest part of Jyotish and purely Indian. However, as an ayurvedic practitioner with thousands of patient files I could not consistently reconcile the pathology with the birth chart. Of course, sometimes the disease is obvious in a chart and very straight forward. It was the 40% of patients that were not easy to understand that kept intriguing me, and also, to be frank, at times baffling me.
I am deeply indebted to a number of serious India astrologers who have selflessly published their own research, methods and findings over the years. Nothing in these pages is original as I have taken from everyone and tried many methods in order to decipher the mystery that is Jyotish. Here I am presenting what I have found that works as an ayurvedic Vaidya. I am basing these findings not from the point of view as an astrologer, but rather as an ayurvedic doctor. However, it has to work as an astrologer as well, or it would be worthless. I feel that together both Ayurveda and Jyotish form an incredible vision into life and health and disease specifically."
